Bonaire, 1981

Bonaire adopted its flag on 11 December 1981. It has a small yellow triangle at the top hoist, representing the sun, and a large blue triangle, taking up half the area of the flag at the bottom fly, symbolising the sea. A white stripe divides the triangles. It displays a black compass, representing the population of Bonaire who comes from the four corners of the world, and a red six-pointed star, for the original six villages of Bonaire: Andriol, Nikiboko, Nort Saliña, Playa, Rincón and Tera Korá. The colours red, white, and blue also show Bonaire’s loyalty to the Kingdom of the Netherlands. Vexillologist Whitney Smith was involved in developing the flag’s design
